A 70-year-old doctor in the Free State is in the intensive care unit after contracting the coronavirus, health minister Zweli Mkhize confirmed on Saturday. He is one of 12 doctors who have been confirmed to have tested positive for Covid-19. “It must be emphasised that none of these health workers were infected by patients that they were treating,” Mkhize said. “They came into contact with their family members, friends and other colleagues who had tested positive for Covid-19. All individuals who were identified as contacts of these health workers have been put in quarantine and are being monitored.” In Limpopo and Mpumalanga, one medical doctor from each province had tested positive after travelling abroad on holiday. The Gauteng Department of Health confirmed on Friday 27 March, that a group of German tourists are currently under quarantine after one of them was confirmed positive for COVID-19.  One member of the group who tested positive for COVID-19 is currently at a health facility in Gauteng. The group had planned on leaving the country on Thursday 26 March.  “Port Health Services were alerted and responded to the situation leading to the group being grounded,” said Gauteng health department spokesperson Kwara Kekana.  More than 60 German tourists quarantined in Gauteng  Kekana said 47 tourists in the group are currently at a health facility in Gauteng.  “Due to the limited quarantine space, separate arrangements were made to have the other 15 members of the group accommodated at one of the Gauteng health facilities and are under quarantine,” she said.  “It is disappointing that the group was not cooperative with officials, to a point where pol...

wo people have died as a result of Coronavirus (COVID-19), says the Minister of Health, Dr Zweli Mkhize. “This morning, we wake South Africans up with sad news that we now have our first deaths resulting from COVID-19,” Mkhize said in a statement on Friday. The deaths occurred in the Western Cape: one at a private hospital and the other at a public hospital. Mkhize said government will provide more details on these deaths when it announces the latest confirmed COVID-19 cases, which have tipped the 1 000 mark. The deaths come as South Africa entered the first day of a 21-day national lockdown aimed at slowing down the spread of the virus. Police have arrested 55 people on a largely successful operation, on the first day of a nationwide 21-day lockdown, Police Minister Bheki Cele said.  “We had a good night, [it was] a success. Many South Africans had a very good will, our phones were abuzz with reports and things that were seen and telling us we need to stop those things,” he said. At a briefing of the National Command Council on Friday evening, the Minister said those who refuse to cooperate with law enforcement authorities during the 21-day COVID-19 enforced national lockdown, will be forced to do so. The 55 were arrested across the nine provinces as South Africa entered the lockdown on Thursday midnight. To date, South Africa has 1 170 cases of Coronavirus, with one confirmed death and one death highly suspected to be linked to COVID-19.
